TIKAL is an ancient ruin located in the Peten Basin of Northern Guatemala and was one of the largest cities during the Mayan civilization (spanning roughly 700 B.C. to 900 A.D.). It was suddenly abandoned and then rediscovered during the 1800’s by Europeans during expeditions to uncover a rumored lost ancient Mayan city in the jungles of Central America. From 1956-70, the University of Pennsylvania embarked on a major archeological excavation: to uncover the structures of Tikal that were mostly buried under thick forest vegetation and restore the structures to their original integrity.

The excavation documented roughly 200 structures for public view, however archeologists postulate thousands of structures remain to be unearthed.
